ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to review the situation of the elderly in different cultures since antiquity, and the different attitudes towards her. It is explained how utilitarian and interest conflicts stem from these interactions and how some cultures gave extreme solutions to them. The problem of the elderly in contemporary society is then analyzed, in an attempt to differentiate between what may be a true moral dilemma and a conflict of interest. From such differentiation I conclude with some thoughts on the obligations of the State towards the elderly.

Key words: Bioethics, dilemma, health of the elderly, senicide, gerontocide.
