Objective: To present the case of a patient with unilateral vocal cord paralysis and its treatment by means of type-I thyroplasty and a Montgomery implant.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Report of a case
Case description: We present the case of a 60-years old patient with unilateral vocal cord paralysis secondary to a thyroidectomy. The patient was subjected to phonosurgery with thyroplasty and placement of a Montgomery implant. The patient presented notable improvement, objectively and subjectively, in voice quality. We discuss the surgical technique used and the characteristics of the implant.
Conclusion: Thyroplasty with placement of a silicon Montgomery-type implant is the ideal alternative for patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis due to the low morbidity of the surgery and the intrinsic characteristics of the implant, which ease its placement; besides, the implant is well tolerated, has no migrating possibilities, and yields excellent results in regard to phonation.
