Objective: To report a case of a female patient in whom polycystic liver disease of the adult was diagnosed clinically, through imaging and histologically.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Description of the case. A 34 years old woman with clinical symptoms of 6 months of evolution characterized by diffuse abdominal pain, increase of the abdominal perimeter, weight loss, and palpable mass in the right hemiabdomen. Imaging studies revealed multiple liquid collections in the liver and a cystic mass occupying more than 40% of the abdominal cavity. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a giant cyst in the liver with clear liquid, dependent on the right lobe and multiple cysts in the left lobe. Unroofing of the cyst of the right hepatic lobe as well as of some of the left lobe was performed. The histopathologic diagnosis was of polycystic liver disease of the adult. The patient was discharged in good conditions.
