Ballistics: Ballistics of effects or ballistics of wounds

Objective: To review the basic concepts of internal and external, as well as terminal or effect ballistics.
Data collection: We analyzed the reports published in the Anglo-Saxon literature (44 articles).
Design: Review article.
Results: We describe the physical characteristics of the missiles produced by the most common firearms, their behavior at impact and during displacement inside a tissue, that is, the lesions produced and the main types of firearms. Besides, we discuss the treatment of the lesions produced by the different types of missiles. Low-velocity missiles produce circular or longitudinal entrance and exit orifices, in general, with little tissular damage. At the other end are the high-velocity missiles, especially the fragmental ones, which produce great tissular damage, around and in the vicinity of the missile’s trajectory, even without direct contact with the injured organ.
Conclusion: It is very important to obtain information regarding the type of firearm and missile that caused the lesion to be able to predict the damage and establish treatment. Treatment of lesions produced by high velocity fragmental missiles generally require large debridements, intestinal diversions, removal of organs, drainages, open wounds, and extensive rehabilitation.
