Purpose: To review the main epidemiological and physiopathogenic aspects, as well as the clinical course, diagnosis and treatment of non-parasitic hepatic cysts.
Data collection: Review of the international literature (78 selected references) and medical books on the subject (13 references).
Selection of data: The most relevant biomedical articles (78 references) and medical books (11 in English, 2 in Spanish) on the subject were chosen.
Data extraction: A review of the literature published between 1965 and 2001 on the clinical-epidemiological, imaging, and therapeutic aspects of the disease was performed. The MEDLINE database was used to locate and select the articles. Books on the medical- surgical profile, as well as those covering liver diseases and basic sciences, were consulted.
Results on data synthesis: It has been considered that solitary hepatic cyst and polycystic hepatic diseases are two different manifestations of the same process. They are rarely diagnosed clinically, however, their identification has increased with the systematic use of imaging studies. Surgery is indicated in those highly symptomatic patients or in the presence of complications. Biliary communication of the cyst and its neoplastic transformation are feasible.
Conclusion: The incidence of this disease is undoubtedly higher than reported in the literature. The review of the literature demonstrated the need for an integrated surgical evaluation, requiring an adequate identification of the type of cyst, location, and precise anatomical relations, to be able to establish the appropriate treatment.
