ABSTRACTBackground: Pemphigus vulgaris is associated with a high mortality, compared with other primary bullous skin diseases. There are few data about risk factors for induction of the disease among Mexican people.
Objective: To examine the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with pemphigus vulgaris in a general hospital of Mexico City.
Patients and method: We conducted a clinical and epidemiological study to determine these factors.
Results: We found that smoking (as protective factor, OR 0.2, CI95% 0.086-0.469, p=0.0001) and exposure to pesticides (as risk factor, OR 6.147, CI95% 2.56-14.72, p=0.0001) are important elements for pemphigus induction and severity.
Conclusion: The knowledge of these factors can reduce the episodes of exacerbations in the patients with the disease, increasing their survival and improving their quality of life.
