ABSTRACTBackground: Onichocryptosis is a condition frequently seen in young persons. The treatment depends on the degree of affection, for mild cases conservative treatment is indicated, for moderate and severe cases with hypertrophy and soft tissue granulation, matrixectomy is the treatment of choice.
Objective: To compare healing, intensity of pain, edema, secretion, bleeding and incapacity during the postoperative period between surgical partial matrixectomy (SPM) and partial matrixectomy with electrofulguration (PME).
Patients and methods: 33 patient with diagnosis of onichocryptosis stages II-III were included in an open comparative study, they were divided in two groups for their treatment (SPM and PME). Follow up was made at 24 h, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 56 days. The Kruskal Wallis test was used for statistic analysis.
Results: Healing occurred first in the SPM group, (65 vs 42%) at week two. Pain was present in only 41% in the SPM group comparedwith 57% in the PME group. There were no statistical difference in the intensity of pain (p=3.29), edema and secretion. There were no recurrences at 3 months of follow up.
Conclusions: SPM has advantage in healing time and less incidence of pain during the postoperative period. Long term efficacy needs to be compared.
