RESUMEN
El lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) es una enfermedad autoinmune, crónica, que afecta predominantemente a mujeres en edad reproductiva. Sin embargo 10-20% de los pacientes son diagnosticados en la infancia. Durante las últimas décadas el pronóstico ha mejorado significativamente, debido al diagnóstico temprano y al uso apropiado de inmunosupresores. Algunas series reportan una supervivencia a 5 años de 100%, sin embargo otras todavía presentan mal pronóstico. La presencia de actividad lúpica que afecta a ciertos órganos, como el riñón y el sistema nervioso central, impactan negativamente la supervivencia. El estatus socioeconómico, la edad al inicio de la enfermedad y la raza han sido implicados negativamente también con el pronóstico. En la mayoría de los estudios las tres principales causas de muerte son la actividad lúpica asociada a la insuficiencia de algún órgano, infecciones y enfermedad cardiovascular. El propósito de esta revisión es resumir los factores pronósticos asociados a una menor supervivencia en pacientes pediátricos con lupus eritematoso sistémico.
