Psychosocial and mental health during the COVID-19 lockdown: A rapid qualitative study in migrant shelters at the Mexico-United States border

RESUMEN

Introducción. La pandemia de COVID-19 podría tener consecuencias psicosociales y de salud mental en las personas migrantes. Se requieren investigación sobre las necesidades e intervenciones útiles en esta población. Objetivo. Describir las consecuencias en salud mental de la pandemia y el confinamiento en migrantes en albergues en Tijuana, México, durante la pandemia de COVID-19, las barreras a la atención en salud mental en este periodo y los elementos clave del apoyo psicosocial proporcionado por organizaciones de la sociedad civil (OSC), de acuerdo con el personal de los albergues. Método. Estudio cualitativo rápido en abril-mayo 2020, con entrevistas a responsables y trabajadores de ocho albergues para migrantes, e información de un proyecto etnográfico en curso. Situamos los resultados de acuerdo con los niveles del marco de apoyo psicosocial y en salud mental del Comité Interagencial de Naciones Unidas (IASC). Resultados. Además de miedo al contagio e inseguridad económica, los migrantes experimentaron malestar emocional relacionado con el endurecimiento de políticas migratorias, y las dificultades del confinamiento en espacios no privados. Algunas OSCs continuaron o adaptaron sus actividades previas de apoyo psicosocial, ayudando a los migrantes en estos aspectos, pero otras actividades se interrumpieron por el distanciamiento físico y la disminución de recursos. Los mismos migrantes implementaron algunas actividades grupales. Surgieron iniciativas de apoyo en línea por parte de la sociedad civil, pero algunos albergues carecen de los recursos tecnológicos y otros necesarios para aprovecharlas. Discusión y conclusión. Las personas migrantes requieren una respuesta adaptada a sus necesidades de salud mental en la pandemia, del tipo proporcionado por las OSCs.
