Los crecientes requerimientos de salud global condicionan que anualmente se realicen más de 320 millones de intervenciones quirúrgicas a nivel mundial. Un volumen tan elevado de pacientes, que implica a sociedades con sistemas sanitarios heterogéneos y desiguales, escenarios disímiles y divergencias en la calidad de la atención médica, repercute en la incidencia de complicaciones perioperatorias, estimadas en aproximadamente 50 millones de personas cada año, con una mortalidad superior al 3%.
Los resultados adversos perioperatorios tienen un origen multifactorial; factores inherentes al paciente, como la urgencia quirúrgica, comorbilidades asociadas y la condición clínica preoperatoria; y factores independientes al paciente, como las características del centro asistencial, el entorno perioperatorio y el factor humano.
