El síndrome de respuesta inflamatoria sistémica (SIRS) es desencadenado por diversos factores como intervenciones quirúrgicas, traumatismos, quemaduras, isquemia, pancreatitis y translocación bacteriana. La sepsis es un SIRS asociado con una infección bacteriana. Tanto el SIRS como la sepsis tienden a provocar una producción excesiva de citocinas y otras moléculas inflamatorias, induciendo el fracaso multiorgánico, como la lesión pulmonar aguda, la lesión renal aguda y la lesión cardíaca inflamatoria.REFERENCIAS (EN ESTE ARTÍCULO)
