La selección de donantes debe proteger simultáneamente
la salud del donante y la seguridad
del receptor, sin introducir exclusiones carentes
de fundamento. Durante décadas, numerosos
sistemas de sangre utilizaron la pertenencia a
determinados grupos –en particular, los hombres
que tienen sexo con hombres– como sustituto del
riesgo individual de infección por virus de inmunodeficiencia
humana (VIH). Fue una respuesta a
la emergencia epidemiológica y a las limitaciones
diagnósticas de su época, pero perdió precisión
con los avances científicos y tecnológicos.
La prevalencia elevada de VIH en una población
no equivale al riesgo de cada persona que
la integra.
