Independientemente de nuestra edad, sexo, estilo de vida, raza, escolaridad, nivel socioeconómico y cultural, los seres humanos somos amenazados continuamente por las enfermedades infecciosas.
Resulta difícil pensar que situaciones cotidianas como trabajar, comer en restaurantes, centros de trabajo, escuelas o guarderías, transportarse en el metro o por vía aérea, vacaciones en una playa, desierto o bosque, sumergirse en un jacuzzi, descansar en el patio de la casa, tomar agua de la llave, tener sexo, jugar con la mascota, hospitalizarse, puedan representar actualmente hechos de vida o muerte.
