RESUMEN

La infección crónica por el virus de la hepatitis C (VHC) es una de las principales causas de hepatopatía en el mundo. En esta revisión se comenta la información obtenida en la literatura en relación a la asociación entre diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y hepatitis crónica viral C. Los estudios publicados recientemente han demostrado que la presencia de anticuerpos anti-VHC en diabéticos varía del 4 al 28%, en tanto que en los sujetos con hepatitis crónica C la prevalencia de diabetes puede llegar a ser hasta del 50%. Sin embargo, el papel del virus C en la generación de trastornos en el metabolismo de los carbohidratos no está definido ni sus implicaciones a largo plazo.
