Entre las causas de muerte en el recién nacido las imputables a una ventilación pulmonar anormal alcanzan un alto porcentaje (Cuadro 1). Conforme disminuye la edad de gestación (2), así como el peso en el momento del nacimiento, el porcentaje de causa de muerte por problemas respiratorios aumenta llegando en niños menores de 1.500 grs. a 56.8% y 72.8% respectivamente en prematuros con peso menor de 1.000 gramos.
