La definición de vía aérea difícil (VAD) que la American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) ha dado es la situación clínica en la que un anestesiólogo con entrenamiento convencional experimenta dificultad con la ventilación a través de mascarilla facial, intubación orotraqueal o ambas. La vía aérea difícil representa un escenario complejo, en donde convergen las características propias del paciente, el contexto clínico y las habilidades del anestesiólogo.
La anestesia en un paciente con vía aérea difícil puede resultar en trauma directo a la vía aérea e incremento en la morbilidad debido a la hipoxia e hipercapnia ocasionadas.
