ABSTRACT

The posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is an entity that occurs suddenly, its epidemiology is not entirely accurate, but approximately 105 case reports are estimated per year, affecting any age group including pregnant women. Pathophysiology remains poorly understood and have been proposed 4 theories that explain its development. Multiple triggers of this syndrome are known that may develop: encephalopathy, epileptic seizures, visual disturbances and headache. We note the importance of the use of magnetic resonance to achieve the diagnosis and rule out other entities that can simulate an encephalopathy of these characteristics. We focus on its treatment, which is based on the clinical manifestations and the evolution that occurs after initial symptoms, despite the great majority of patients goes to remission of symptoms, suffering from this entity entitles high morbidity and mortality. For these reasons, making a quick diagnosis and initiating early treatment are of utmost importance to minimize complications, since mortality can reach 19% of all cases.
