ABSTRACT

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a condition in which the voluntarily and repetitively tearing of hair during a long period of time, causes alopecic areas. It occurs predominantly on the scalp, although it can present in eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic hair or any hairy area. It is characterized by the presence of non-scarring alopecia in asymmetric patches or in unusual or motley shapes, where hairs with broken terminal characteristics of different lengths can be observed.
We present a 50-year-old female patient presenting an extensive pseudoalopecic areas where the presence of hairs of various sizes and accumulation of hair of terminal characteristics were found. Trichoscopy and biopsy were performed confirming the diagnosis of TTM. The treatment of this entity must be multidisciplinary, including the collaboration of both dermatologists and mental health specialists.
