ABSTRACT
In México, there is a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adult population,
the same percentage is associated with the sedentary population of the country.
One of the main alterations that accompany this syndrome is the insulin resistance,
which greatly affects the muscles, and thus makes them of great interest. Since the
skeletal and cardiac muscles cover the 40.5% of the body, and play an important
role in the control of energetic metabolism in the body, are of great interest when
studying metabolic abnormalities. In this review, muscle function, metabolism and
endocrine alterations derived from the development of metabolic syndrome are explored.
Also the contributions of the exercise to the maintenance of a healthy state
and the effect it has on the skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue over the control of the
metabolic syndrome are highlighted.
Therefore, the objective of this review is to gather enough information to describe
the metabolic and functional alterations suffered by muscle tissues during the metabolic
syndrome, their role as insulin sensitivity regulators, as well as the consequent
modifications under exercise.
