ABSTRACT

Introduction: Organ donation is an altruistic act with which it is possible to help improve the quality of life of people with organ or tissue failure. Given the shortage of organs and tissues for transplantation, it is necessary to implement strategies that promote the culture of donation. One of these is the proper education and positive attitude of trainee physicians toward organ and tissue donation. Objective: To know the knowledge and attitudes regarding the subject of organ and tissue donation of the health personnel who work at the "Dr. and Gral. Rafael Moreno Valle" Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital, during the first four-month period of 2019. Material and methods: A prospective, open, observational and descriptive study was carried out. The instrument was the application of surveys which consists of 16 questions, the answers were multiple choice. The selection of the sample was random from the health personnel. Results: The means by which the interviewees stated that they had received more information about organ and tissue donation was through health professionals (92%), a high percentage of the total health personnel surveyed was unaware that tendons/ligaments (56%) and pancreas (50%) can be donated. As for the term "brain death" 83% understand it. 75% of the health personnel showed a favorable attitude towards organ donation, as they gave a positive response when asked if they would donate their organs as they consider it a way of giving life. Discussion: This study revealed that 78% of the respondents had a positive attitude towards organ and tissue donation. Similar results have been reported in recent studies conducted in Spain and Latin America. Conclusion: This article has shown that there are areas for improvement in the implementation of various trainings to increase the knowledge of health personnel about organ donation.
