ABSTRACT

Introduction: Th e Human Immunodefi ciency Virus (HIV) is a pandemic. Rapid HIV testing can provide HIV-1 test results in 30 minutes and is useful in settings where follow-up care of patients is challenging. Objectives: Early identifi cation of patients with HIV through antibody detection tests as well as capture and analysis of risk factors in the population studied. Material and methods: Epidemiological, cross-sectional study of early detection of HIV through rapid tests in the COVID-19 emergency department of the Hospital General de Occidente. Results: In our population (n = 355) there is a greater risk of up to 38 times the probability of documenting a positive rapid test in subjects who reported homosexual practices [p <0.001, OR 31.8 (CI95% 6.10-166)] with respect to another type of sexual practice. Patients who did not report screening in the last year showed a greater possibility of obtaining a positive test [p ‹0.001, OR 32 (95% CI 3.90-269)]. Other common risk factors in HIV were not associated with an increased risk of a positive test (p> 0.05) in our population. Conclusions: Screening for HIV in the emergency department is important for the early initiation of antiretroviral therapy and improving the life expectancy and quality of life of patients. In our population, the most important risk factors are relationships with the same sex and the absence of screening in the last year.
