ABSTRACT

Prevalence of fecal incontinence in the general population is of 8-9%, increasing with age, becoming 15% in those over 70 years of age. In recent studies, modulation of the sacral nerve has been proposed as an effective and minimally invasive therapy for patients with insufficient improvement after conservative therapy. It is effective and safe both in young patients and those over 70 years of age and on various pathologies including pelvic radiation therapy. It has a higher success rate and fewer complications in women than in men. However, to establish generalized recommendations, it is necessary to increase the number of investigations in this field. In this way, healthcare professionals will be able to offer patients the best care based on the latest scientific evidence.
