ABSTRACT

Introduction: To make optimum, appropriate use of medicinal plants, plant drugs and natural therapies, it is essential to search for information about them using their scientific names, which are universal and respond to rules of nomenclature. It is common practice to use the plants known as stonebreakers to treat several diseases. However, not all of them have been scientifically tested nor is there a description of their morphological and biometric features.
Objective: Provide information about the morphological and biometric characteristics of the species known as stonebreakers. Methods: Analysis was performed of the species Euphorbia prostrata Aiton., Euphorbia hyssopifolia L., Phyllanthus amarus Schumach &Thonn and Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb., specimens of which were collected from the city of São Mateus, ES. The following morphological features were assessed: phyllotaxis, venation, margin, and shape of the limbo, including the tip and the base. For biometric analysis, 15 specimens were selected from each species. Only leaves amounting to 30 between the third and the ninth nodes were examined. Attention was paid to the length and width of the limbo and the length of the petiole.
Results: Morphologically, the specimens analyzed were found to be similar in terms of appearance and significant differences in their stem and leaves due to the shape of their tip. This criterion may be useful to distinguish Euphorbia and Phyllanthus species. Differences were also found in the edges and phyllotaxis, which may be due to the genera to which the four study species belong.
Conclusion: Morphological and biometric analysis found that E. prostrata is characterized by its creeping stem and the smallest leaf size mean values.
