ABSTRACT

Introduction: Carapichea ipecacuanha (Brot) L Andersson (ipecacuanha) is included in the list of endangered species due to its uncontrolled extraction, fostered by the great economic potential of its emetine and cephaeline alkaloid compounds. Despite its importance, few studies have been conducted aimed at understanding the growth mechanisms involved in the sustainable production of this species, its preservation and even its repopulation in areas meeting its physiological requirements.
Objective: evaluate the growth response of ipecacuanha when subjected to different substrate compositions and shade conditions.
Methods: the study was conducted in the Gragoatá campus of the Fluminense Federal University in Niterói, RJ. Growth assays were performed with various substrates: black soil, black earth plus Bokashi®, black earth plus Bokashi® plus sand, black earth plus sand, and different shade levels: 50%, 70% and 90%.
Results: plants under 50% shading had a more positive growth response from May to October than those under 70% and 90% shading. However, from November 2014 to January 2015 plants under less than 50% shading developed symptoms of light excess, showing that in that period plants need greater shading.
Conclusions: differentiated growth of ipecacuanha under the various treatments is directly related to adjustment by the plant to temperature, as well as the substrate and the shade level. Plants under 50% shading grew fast, whereas under 90% shading there was an increase in their values due to the shady nature of the environment.
