Preliminary results of laparoscopic simple prostatectomy

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Open conventional surgery has been the chosen one for benign prostatic hyperplasia with surgical indication and volumes higher than 80 ml. Simple prostatectomy with laparoscopic approach is a minimally invasive alternative for these patients.
Objective: To expose the preliminary results of laparoscopic approach in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Materials and method: It was carried out a descriptive observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study in eight patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia whom underwent a laparoscopic extraperitoneal approach in the National Center of Minimal Access in a period of 10 months.
Results: Average age: 68 years. The preoperative international rate of Prostatic Symptoms (IPSS) was of 29, and surgery was indicated in most of the cases due to failure in the pharmacological treatment. The average pre-operative prostatic volume and the vesical waste estimated by ecography were 93,5 ml and 167 ml, respectively. Average surgical time was 161 minutes. There was not open surgery. One patient needed blood transfusion. There were 3 stage I-II complications. Average hospital stay was of 5,1 days and the time of vesical catheter’s use was of 6 days. In the post-operative period, the average vesical waste decreased to 17 ml and the IPSS to 5.
Conclusions: The laparoscopic approach is a feasible and safe technique that allows through minimally invasive surgery to face the surgical treatment of large prostatic adenomas. It is necessary to analyze a larger sample of patients to accomplish better levels of scientific evidence.
