ABSTRACT

Introduction. The family, as a primary social group formed by individuals with blood ties, marriage or affinity, which interact and coexist with each other and where the functionality in their dynamic impact on the health of its members, indirectly modify the nutritional status of children to an excess (obesity) or deficit (malnutrition ) . The objective of the study was to estimate the correlation between family dynamics and the nutritional status of children of the nursery number 01 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Cancun, Quintana Roo.
Material and method. Correlation study with all nursery school children and whose parents have a current relationship. For nutritional assessment, indicators of weight-for-age, heightfor- age, weight-for-height and body mass index (BMI)-for- age were used. The measuring of the Mexican Nuclear Family Dynamics was used. The correlation was evaluated with the Spearman correlation coefficient.
Results. A total of 174 children were included, 51,7% were girls, nutritional status was normal in 70,1%, and overweight and obesity was identified in 29,9% of children. Family dynamics was reported as functional in 89,7% and dysfunctional in 10,3%. With regard to the relationship, a Rho = 0.177 (p = 0.019) was obtained.
Conclusion. Family dynamics showed no relationship to the nutritional status of children, however it is important to point out that malnutrition was not found in them, but obesity is located above the prevalence reported by the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2012.
