ABSTRACT

Introduction: The objective of this research was to establish the prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus and to evaluate its relationship with the stages of periodontitis and the metabolic condition of glucose. Material and methods: 50 patients of both sexes who met the inclusion criteria participated. The degree of periodontal disease was defined according to Papapanou et al. gingival fluid samples were taken at two deeper sites. Porphyromonas gingivalis was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Metabolic compensation was assessed by measuring glycosylated hemoglobin. Results: The distribution of the degrees of periodontitis as a function of the metabolic control of glycemia did not present statistical significance (p = 0.8633). According to the methodology used, the prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in gingival fluid was 30%. No statistically significant differences were found between the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis and metabolic glycemic control (p = 0.6997). The presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis as a function of the degree of Periodontitis did not present statistically significant differences (p = 0.5188). Conclusion: The prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis does not influence type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, likewise the metabolic control of glucose and the presence of periodontal disease behave independently.
