ABSTRACT

Introduction: Nowadays the treatment of inguinal hernias is performed in an elective and ambulatory manner; complications have been reduced to minimum, with the use of adequate prosthetics, prophylactic antibiotics and no tension technics.
Case: Masculine 69 years old, with a previous diagnose of laparoscopic transabdominal repair, to repair an inguinal hernia 4 months before being admitted, he developed an infection that required colostomy and retrieval of the polypropylene mesh, the patient developed a chronic secretion of purulent material in the inguinal region; it was later diagnosed as a chronic sinus, and was submitted to surgery and required a second intention closure.
Discussion: Most complications associated with prosthetic material include seromas, hematomas and in a small group of infectious complications, which rarely become chronic.
