ABSTRACT

Orthognathic surgery is used to correct congenital or acquired maxillary discrepancies of the middle and lower thirds of the face. Several benefits have been reported in the masticatory function and in the aesthetics of patients, however, numerous vascular and nerve complications, infections, bone necrosis, and recurrences, among others, have also been reported. Some complications are associated with the incomplete separation of the pterygomaxillary junction in the case of the Le Fort I osteotomy. Despite the frequent use of surgical techniques and their versatility, they are a difficult technical process with numerous intraoperative complications. This is how the main purpose of this article is to expose a series of points that we designed in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the 1st Regional Hospital. October, ISSSTE, entitled "Safety points of the Le Fort I osteotomy" in order to prevent complications during trans-surgery and make the Le Fort I oOsteotomy a safe surgery for the patient and the surgeon.
