Basal cell carcinoma of the upper lip, surgical and reconstructive handling

ABSTRACT

Basal cell carcinoma constitutes 80-90% of all skin cancers and is the most common tumor in humans. It causes a significant impact on the quality of life, with functional and aesthetic morbidity. The anatomical location of the tumor makes us consider reconstructive management, the lips being one of the most complex tumor sites to treat. The reconstruction of large defects of the upper lip constitutes a challenge for the surgeon due to the expectation its results generate not only functional, but also aesthetic. We present the case of a patient with an ulcerated nodular basal cell carcinoma on the upper lip, which was treated by excision and reconstruction with an ipsilateral Gillies fan flap and a contralateral perialar flap with good results.
