ABSTRACT

Introduction and objective: Vision is the most important and developed sense of the human being, a decrease in visual acuity as well as blindness are public and social health problems. Primary open-angle glaucoma is the main irreversible cause of blindness, so it is believed that hours of sleep could be a risk factor for the development of primary open-angle glaucoma. In the present study, the association between intraocular pressure and hours of sleep was determined. Material and methods: An observational, cross sectional and prospective study. Patients who attended the consultation at the Instituto de la Visión in Montemorelos, N.L, were studied from July to August 2021. The variables measured were intraocular pressure and hours of sleep. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used as inferential statistics. Results: 75 participants from the Vision Institute in Montemorelos Nuevo León were analyzed. 52% of the female sex, and average age of 58.64 years. 58.7% have excessive sleepiness. 84.0% in normal ranges of intraocular pressure (IOP) of the right eye and 61% in intraocular pressure of the left eye. An average of 6.67 hours of sleep (SD ± 1.26, min. 3, max. 9), 53.3% belongs to a normal range of hours of sleep and 46.7% insufficient. Associations were calculated for the variables sleep and intraocular pressure, without rejecting the null hypothesis. Conclusion: It was not found that the decrease in the number of hours of sleep directly influences the elevation of intraocular pressure. Despite the fact that studies indicate that the decrease in the hours of sleep influences the elevation of the IOP.
