ABSTRACT

Introduction: Gastric volvulus is a rare entity which was first described in 1841 by Von Rokitansky as a cause of intestinal strangulation. The main clinical factors that suggest a gastric volvulus include severe epigastric pain, retching without vomiting and inability to pass a nasogastric tube. A prompt diagnosis and effective treatment are needed for a good clinical outcome. Case report: We present the case of a 50-year-old man who underwent a laparoscopic fundoplication 10 months prior to admission and presented with progressive abdominal pain and clinical signs suggestive of a gastric volvulus. The diagnosis was confirmed with imaging studies, and a surgical detorsion with gastropexy were performed, with adequate postoperative evolution. Conclusion: Gastric volvulus is a rare medical condition, that presents with a wide spectrum of clinical signs. The creation of guidelines based on scientific evidence should be the objective of future research.
