Oral health status of pregnant women belonging to the polyclinic ‘‘Héroes del Moncada’’ in the Cárdenas municipality

ABSTRACT

Introduction: teeth, supporting tissues and oral mucosa can be affected by the changes induced during pregnancy, which makes oral care necessary in pregnant women. Objective: to characterize the oral health status of pregnant women belonging to the "Héroes del Moncada" Polyclinic in the Cárdenas municipality, Matanzas province. Material and Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the '' Héroes del Moncada '' Polyclinic of the Cárdenas municipality, Matanzas province, from October to December 2020. The universe consisted of 82 pregnant women captured in that period. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results: 58.6% of the pregnant women belonged to the age group between 20 and 29 years old. Pre-university was the predominant level of education (41.5%). Poor oral hygiene was the predominant risk factor with 51 pregnant women (62.2%). Dental caries predominated (70.7%). Conclusions: the oral health status of the pregnant women was found to be deteriorated due to the presence of risk factors such as poor oral hygiene and a cariogenic diet, as well as suffering from oral diseases, including dental caries and periodontal disease.
