ABSTRACT

Chronic pancreatitis is a complex fibroinflammatory syndrome characterized by irreversible damage to the pancreas. It is cause of many comorbidities including malnutrition and chronic pain whose management is so complicated that some cases will need a surgical approach besides the medical one. In its initial stages is quite subtle and hard to distinguish, and often physicians overlook this syndrome due to this lack of overt symptomatology. Initially, the main symptom is abdominal pain, which is described as dull. As the disease progresses, exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency develops. By identifying risk factors in a patient with the aforementioned symptoms, early management can be ideally started. Management of a patient with chronic pancreatitis is complex and requires a multidisciplinary team to address multiple axis such as pain management, nutrition, exocrine and endocrine insufficiency.
