ABSTRACT

The pharmacological treatment of the angina pectoris syndromes consists of: a) anti-ischemic therapy to relieve the symptoms and improve the quality of life, b) treatment aimed at preventing myocardial infarction and death, and c) measures to modify or reduce the risk factors for coronary disease. Revascularization procedures, coronary artery bypass grafting, or percutaneous coronary interventions, are used to improve prognosis, relieve symptoms, prevent ischemic complications, and improve functional capacity. In patients with mild angina, medical therapy, percutaneous coronary interventions and coronary artery bypass surgery are all reasonable options. However, there are indications for pharmacological treatment in the great majority of patients with angina. After a revascularization procedure the patient should continue to receive antiplatelet agents and follow a program of coronary risk factors modification.
