ABSTRACT

Introduction. Recurrent or relapsing apthous stomatitis (RAS) is an inflammatory lesion that appears in the oral cavity and throat; it is characterized by a white or yellow ulceration in the center, and surrounded by a red halo. The symptomatology depends on the patient, the type of lesion present in the oral cavity and its location. It can manifest clinically in 3 forms: minor, major and herpetiform. Objectives. To show the importance of oral examination and taking the clinical history, treating a case of RAS in a major way in an elderly patient, who has suffered from it almost all his life, where the evolution of the disease and changes in the oral cavity, monitored weekly; considering the deterioration of the quality of life due to the inability to use dental prostheses caused by RAS. Also, provides valuable information about this condition for the correct diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and control of the disease; as well as giving greater importance to the oral examination before starting any treatment. Results. The importance of oral examination and clinical history based on a case of RAS, its evolution, changes in the oral cavity, as well as the deterioration in quality of life due to the inability to use dental prostheses caused by the disease suffered was shown; In addition, valuable information about this condition was provided for the correct diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Conclusions. We must give greater importance to the oral examination before starting any treatment, as well as carefully observing all its areas; look for alterations or pathologies that could affect the patient's quality of life, make them aware of what they are suffering from and guide them in the protocol to be followed for their treatment.
