ABSTRACT

Background: Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a halophilic Gram-negative bacillus found in estuarine waters. It is a rare opportunistic pathogen with a high fatality rate.
Clinical case: A 63-year-old female patient with a history of uncontrolled diabetes was admitted to the emergency department with gastrointestinal symptoms and septic shock after mollusk ingestion. Notably, she developed multiple skin lesions that rapidly evolved to necrosis. Blood cultures confirmed V. vulnificus presence. The patient recovered from her condition, but unfortunately, died from cardiovascular causes during the hospitalization.
Conclusions: We present a classic case of gastrointestinal V. vulnificus sepsis to highlight the clinical evolution and risk factors associated with this lethal and preventable disease.
