ABSTRACT

Introduction: encouraging the culture of donation is one of the determining factors for the success of donation and transplantation programs, it is thought that representations in the media about organ donation can be the main source of information on the subject. Objective: to analyze the approach to the issue of organ donation and transplantation by digital newspapers in the state of Puebla. Material and methods: the present study is of an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional type in which a review was carried out of the digital newspapers that provided free electronic access for the study period from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Results: the sample was made up of 265 news items on organ donation and transplantation. Five characteristics of these news were analyzed, finding that, regarding the type of donor, 37% spoke of a cadaveric donor, about the organ donated or transplanted, 18.11% were treated the kidney and 27.54% of multi-organ donations, in the institution of assignment 40.37% corresponded to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), the main character in 44.15% was the health personnel and the main topic was donation and transplants together in 56.22%. Subsequently. The Pearson correlation analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between the news published by digital newspapers with the donations and transplants carried out in the state of Puebla during the study period. Conclusions: analyzing the news allowed us to have an objective view of the approach to the issue of donation and transplants by the Puebla newspapers, finding that the news is usually nonspecific and can superficially address the subject, highlighting spectacular stories such as multi-organ procurement and usually privilege the medical staff in the interview, leaving aside the vision of the family member. On the other hand, there is a clear relationship between the number of news items published in the State of Puebla and the donations and transplants carried out there, so collaboration with the media is essential to encourage the culture of donation.
