ABSTRACT
Streptococcus mutans
is a pathogen related to human dental caries. The determination of the amount of mutans streptococci as well as their proportion to other oral bacteria is of interest for the assessment of the risk for the development of caries. In this way is better to use a sensitive, specific and no time consuming method in relation to the culture and biochemical identification. We used a PCR to identify a sequence from the spaP
gene in order to establish the presence of strains with cariogenic potential of S. mutans
and the relation with the DMFT index. By this method is possible to amplify a 192 bp sequence from de spaP
gene using DNA isolated from dental plaque, the results suggest that is important to evaluate the presence of cariogenic strains of S. mutans
in the plaque content instead of the amount of dental plaque, however, another factors, play a key role in the development of caries.
