ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work is to analyze some ethical problems from the point of view of bioethics about the relationship with the dental patient based on the Official Norms and results of the Comisión Nacional de Arbitraje Médico, CONAMED (National Arbitration Commission of Medicine). We found out that the most patients who complained to the Commission were attended by the private dental practitioner. Their complaints are about their treatment, these complaints are taken care of at the conciliation session. On the other hand, although there has been progress in the norms in Mexico, it hasn’t been enough to handle patients according to the Norma Oficial para la Prevención y Control de Enfermedades Bucales (Normativity for Prevention and Control of Dental Illnesses) such as not having the informed consent in treatment decisions. It is necessary to have more specific technical norms and to teach dental students, professionals and patients about their rights and responsabilities to improve the quality in dental care.
