ABSTRACT

Objective: the objective of this study was to characterize clinically and epidemiologically the patients with anemia in a third level-of-complexity institution between 2016 and 2017. Materials and methods: an observational retrospective descriptive study was conducted, which included people over 18 years with diagnosis of anemia confirmed by laboratory; a non-probabilistic sampling of consecutive cases was performed. A form was designed containing sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical data. The information analysis was performed in the IBM SPSS program version 24. Results: 425 patients were included, the median age of the population was 58 years, it was found that 343 (80.71%) of the patients had a in-hospital management and the rest were out-patient; the maximum number of days of hospital stay was 335 days. The main signs and symptoms of the population were pallor (39.3%), tachycardia (28.2%) and dyspnea (20.5%). In relation to the complete blood count data, a mean hemoglobin and hematocrit of 8.6 g/dL and 26.9% respectively were observed. According to the Wintrobe parameters most of the patients had normochromic normocytic anemia. Conclusion: anemia is a clinical sign that is associated with different outcomes such as prolonged hospital stay, clinical history, age, among others, which is why it should be taken into account when monitoring the evolution of patients in order to guarantee optimal treatment and better clinical management.
