ABSTRACT

Introduction: a butterfly vertebrae (sagittal cleft vertebra or anterior rachischisis) is a sagittal defect in the vertebral body caused by a failure in the fusion of the two lateral chondrification centers during embryogenesis. Objective: to present an atypical case of a patient with a butterfly vertebrae spine without any associated syndrome. Case presentation: a 22-year-old male patient suffered an electric arc burning and a fall of 3 m height. When he was carrying out his traumatic protocol, an L4 butterfly vertebra was identified in his plain roentgenograms. Previously the patient was totally asymptomatic. Conclusions: given the patient's work history (construction worker), he presented greater muscular strength at the level of the lower back. This could be considered a factor associated with this anatomical malformation's absence of clinical symptomatology.
