ABSTRACT

Herpes virus type 6 belongs to the family of herpes viruses that cause infections in humans. It is characterized by producing liver damage with systemic manifestations in the body. The most frequent form is a mononucleosis syndrome in immune-competent patients. The presentation is highly variable and it is very rare in adolescents. The seventeen years-old patient, had a prolonged febrile syndrome with three months of evolution. He was referred from his health area Fray Benito, municipality of Rafael Freyre, to the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedraja at Holguín, Cuba. In addition to the above mentioned symptoms, he had pale cutaneous mucosa, general discomfort and a state of prostration. The studies to determine toxoplasmosis, other infections (such as syphilis or HIV), rubella, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex (ToRCH), conducted at Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute, diagnosed the virus. It was treated for fourteen days with ganciclovir intravenously, at a rate of 5ml/kg/day every twelve hours, evolving favourably to this day.
