ABSTRACT

Introduction: ectopic thyroid gland is the presence of thyroid tissue outside the usual location of the gland. Scintigraphy with metastable technetium 99 is the most accurate diagnostic tool and can detect abnormal locations of thyroid tissue. Case presentation: 13-year-old female, diagnosed with thyroglossal cyst and hypothyroidism; the presence of a nodule was determined by ultrasonography. A thyroid scintigram was performed, which did not demonstrate radiopharmaceutical uptake in the normal anatomical site of the thyroid gland; however, the thyroid gland was identified at the sublingual level, which in an ectopic location. Conclusions: scintigraphy is essential for the definitive diagnosis of an ectopic thyroid gland.
