ABSTRACT

Chagas' disease is one of the most important parasitic diseases in Latin America caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted in more than 80% by hemiptera insects, the triatomine bugs popularly known as "kissing bug". The T. cruzi parasite is transmitted primarily through contact with the infected feces of blood-feeding triatomine bugs. In general, they bite exposed areas of skin, such as the face, and defecate/urinate near the bite. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that this disease affects 7 to 8 million individuals in Latin America. In 2008, the WHO indicates 11,000 deaths from this cause. The most affected age groups are within the productive age, mainly between 25 and 44 years. Clinical case: this is the case of a patient who went to the emergency department with edema in the upper and lower eyelid of the right eye of two weeks evolution, as well as painful erythematous violaceous plaques in the lower extremities, fever and general malaise. Antibody detection tests against T. cruzi were performed by ELISA and indirect hemagglutination (HAI) confirming the diagnosis of Chagas disease.
