ABSTRACT

Introduction. Social cartography involves children in identifying community needs and resources, transforming healthcare.
Objective. To employ social cartography in exploring the perceptions and needs of children and adolescents regarding healthcare in the Yaxcabá, Yucatán community.
Materials and method. Nineteen children and adolescents from Yaxcabá, participated in the study with the prior consent of their parents. A participatory and collaborative approach was employed, commencing with an open call, ensuring equitable representation in terms of gender and age groups. During the focus groups, the participants identified the health center as a crucial location for community health. An interview guide was used during these sessions, and the results were subsequently shared with both the participants and the health center authorities.
Results. Data revealed a strong understanding of health spaces and diverse individual experiences. Participants identified challenges in healthcare center accessibility and service availability. The resulting map depicted the healthcare center, along with issues and needs highlighted by participants. Interviews also revealed that some had sought traditional medicine for healthcare solutions.
Conclusions. Social cartography proved to be an effective tool for involving children and adolescents in identifying healthcare-related issues and needs in their community. Active collaboration allowed for a detailed and representative map.
