ABSTRACT
Introduction: schwannomas are benign tumors that develop from Schwann cells and affect cranial and peripheral nerves, except for the optic and olfactory nerves. They are more commonly seen in individuals aged 20-50, with no gender preference. The etiology of schwannoma is still not clear, but the loss of control of the suppressor oncogene NF2 is one of the major lines of research.
Clinical case: a 54-year-old male patient presented with right lumbosciatica which did not respond well to conservative treatment. Simple magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis revealed a tumor suggestive of Schwannoma located on the right sciatic nerve territory. We performed excision and subsequent histopathology confirmed the diagnosis.
Conclusion: in our clinical case, after an adequate diagnostic method, we proceeded to perform total resection of the lesion and send the tissue obtained for pathology study with confirmatory results and early start of rehabilitation sessions. Our patient obtained improvement in pain without recurrence; these results agree with the aforementioned reports in the literature.
