ABSTRACT
Introduction: in the clinical management with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), simulation training can be a learning opportunity.
Objective: to analyze our experience and educational impact in specialized training with advanced simulation courses in ECMO management.
Material and methods: six theoretical-practical courses are analyzed (four face-to-face courses and two hybrids) that included advanced simulation workshops in ECMO. Each clinical workshop is designed to achieve specific objectives of clinical management, acquisition of technical and non-technical skills, leadership capacity and crisis management. Retrospective descriptive study, with a quality and satisfaction survey at the end of the course.
Results: data from 161 students are analyzed, 57 from hybrid courses. Mostly specialists in intensive medicine or anesthesiology. 71% doctors and 29% perfusionists and nurses. The courses met the expectations of the students, with a high level of satisfaction and overall assessment. Most of the students admit that the contents and skills learned were useful for the development and application of their clinical activity in their professional field.
Conclusions: clinical simulation is consolidated as a teaching tool in highly complex techniques such as ECMO and critical patients. Both course formats had a high degree of satisfaction.
