ABSTRACT
Objective. We review the results of the mitral surgery through a minimally invasive approach in our center within a four year period.
Material and methods. A retrospective review of all the cases of patients treated with mitral valve surgery through a minimally invasive approach during may 2013 and September 2016 were made. Demographic data were collected, the hospital length of stay, intensive care unit length of stay, cardiopulmonary bypass time and aortic clamp time, surgical bleeding, postoperative bleeding, use of blood components, surgical time, mechanical ventilation support and postoperative complications were registered.
Results. A total of 881 mitral valve procedures were made in the study period, 37 through a minimally invasive approach. The median age was 54.3 years (range, 27-72 years), BMI 27.6 kg/m2 (range, 21.2-33.5 kg/m2). Systemic hypertension was present in 35% of patients, diabetes mellitus 15%, dyslipidemia 25%, smoking 20% and atrial fibrillation in 65%. The average length of stay was 7 days, intensive care unit stay 3 day. Median operative bleeding was 168.7 ml and postoperative bleeding 326 ml. The average cardiopulmonary bypass time was 135 minutes, with an average of aortic cross-clamping time of 91.8 minutes. No deaths occurred.
Conclusions. Mitral valve surgery through a minimally invasive approach is a safe and effective option for the treatment of patients with mitral valve disease.
