Functional limitation and ability to work in post-surgery patients for herniated disc

ABSTRACT

Introduction: chronic low back pain secondary to disc disorders is a major public health problem due to the increase in days of disability, frequent consultations to medical services and low labor productivity and cause of disability. Objective: to determine the correlation of the functional limitation and the loss of the capacity for work patients who had disc herniation surgery who came to evaluation for probable state of disability in the occupational health service of the UMF 61, Boca del Río, Veracruz. Material and methods: an observational, correlational, cross-sectional, prospective study was performed in post-operated patients of lumbar disc herniation who came to assess the probable state of disability. The sample consisted of 100% of the census of workers that met the inclusion criteria, the result obtained in the ID card was reviewed to assess the overall percentage of the loss of capacity for work and the scale of disability of low back pain Oswestry. Results: the correlation between the percentage of work capacity established in the disability assessment opinion and the Oswestry functional limitation score in patients who had disc herniation surgery was r = 0.732. Conclusions: there is a positive correlation between the percentage of loss of ability to work with the Oswestry index for functional limitation in patients who had disc herniation surgery in the UMF 61, Boca del Río, Veracruz.
